ROBERT'S WALKING GUIDE TO SONOMA
The Vineyard Walk
Starting at the Cottage, walk north on First
Street East to the bike path (just south of the Vintage House).
Walk east on the bike path.
At Second Street East, to the north, visit
The Patch for wonderful farm fresh organic fruits and vegetables
in season. Just to the south on Second Street East is the "Bear
Flag" Vella Cheese Factory with nationally famous Sonoma
Jack, a perennial award winner.
Continue east on the bike path, walking among
Sebastiani vineyards. The stone house on the hill at your left is
Sylvia Sebastiani's home, featured on Sebastiani wine labels.
At Fourth Street East, where the bike path
ends, Sebastiani Winery is on your right, just beyond the
parking area, with it's very enjoyable tasting room. Tours are available.
Straight out from the bike path is Lovall Valley
Road. Head east past a stone wall and picnic area. To the left are
vineyards accessed through a stone arch; you can choose to amble
through the vineyard or head a bit further down Lovall Valley Road
and turn left on Gehricke.
To circle back to the Inn, turn left on Brazil
Street, left on Fourth Street East and watch for the bike path on
your right.
Otherwise, continue up Gehricke Road to Ravenswood
Winery on the left side, overlooking vineyards to the east.
Try the Zinfandel....
Continue on Gehricke Road, now a narrow, tree
shaded lane, for about a quarter of a mile (watch for cars!). The
road winds to the right, over a stream. The Haywood Vineyard
is on your left. This is the road on which "A Walk in the Clouds"
was filmed. Continue north up the grade. Just before the crest,
look to the right to view the stone ruins of a dream house never
completed.
After your walk, return to Gehricke Road and
retrace your steps to the Inn.
Total distance is approximately 5 miles.
If you circle back at Brazil Street, it is about 3 miles.
